Heuristic Transformation of Well-Constructed Conceptual Maps into OWL Preliminary Domain Ontologies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ontologies are a form of knowledge representation that is meant for software systems, or agents, as well as for human users. Building an ontology consists of, in short, formally specifying concepts and their relations concerning a certain knowledge domain. Such specification should convey an interpretation of the domain as agreed by experts and requires specific ontology engineering skills. In relation to ontologies, conceptual maps are a more informal, simple and, thus, accessible form of knowledge representation. However, the freedom enjoyed in defining concepts and their links makes it difficult to directly draw formal representations from conceptual maps. This work presents heuristics that are able to transform conceptual maps into ontologies specified in OWL (Web Ontology Language). In this way, the ease of construction of conceptual maps can be taken advantage of to alleviate the knowledge acquisition bottleneck that is inherent in ontology engineering.

CMAPS Supporting the Development of OWL Ontologies
In this paper, we present MAP2OWL, a software tool that allows the development of OWL ontologies as concept maps. MAP2OWL uses existing OWL constructs to represent conceptual maps; in this way, domain experts develop ontolologies in a graphical conceptual way, not having to be aware of syntactic matters, or issues related to interfaces that were designed for knowledge engineers. MAP2OWL facilit...
متن کاملGeneration of OWL Ontologies from Concept Maps in Shallow Domains
A proposal is presented for integration between a graphical model, such as conceptual maps, and ontologies codified in the OWL language. Conceptual maps are a flexible form of knowledge representation, very useful in education-related collaborative environments; OWL is a language of knowledge representation oriented to semantic analysis and processing carried out by machines. Integration consis...
متن کاملConceptual Modelling in UML and OWL-2
Both OWL-2 and UML static class diagrams lend themselves very well for conceptual modelling of complex information systems. Both languages have their advantages. In order to benefit from the advantages and software tools of both languages, it is usually necessary to repeat the modelling process for each language. We have investigated whether and how conceptual models written in one language can...
متن کاملTransforming Between UML Conceptual Models And OWL 2 Ontologies
The ISO 19103 standard—defining rules and guidelines for conceptual modeling in the geographic domain—has deliberately chosen the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as “conceptual schema language” for geographic information systems. From today’s perspective—i.e. when taking into account today’s mature semantic web technology—another language might also be envisioned as language for specifying appl...
متن کاملOWLRel: Learning Rich Ontologies from Relational Databases
Mapping between ontologies and relational databases is a necessity in realising the Semantic Web vision. Most of the work concerning this topic has either (1) extracted OWL schemas using a limited range of OWL modelling constructs from relational schemas, or (2) extracted relational schemas from OWL schemas, that represent the OWL schemas as much as possible. By contrast, we propose a general f...
